About this event

Creative practitioners, studios, agencies, educators and friends of the course, you are invited to join us for a special guest lecture from the talented Mr Bingo, which will be hosted in our very own Dorothy Fleming Lecture Theatre on our City Campus.

Talk title:

‘What I’ve learnt so far’

Mr Bingo was a commercial illustrator for 15 years, working regularly for clients such as The New Yorker, The Guardian, TIME, CH4, The Mighty Boosh & The New York Times. An archive of the thousands of illustrations from this period doesn’t exist online because he got bored once in a motorhome and deleted his entire portfolio website.

In 2015 he launched a Kickstarter to fund a book about his Hate Mail project. The campaign featured a rap video and a diverse selection of rewards including being trolled, having your washing up done, and going on a date in Wetherspoons.

He decided around this period to never work for clients ever again and focus on being some sort of artist which he’s done ever since. In 2023 Mr Bingo decided to take an entire year off as an experiment and left London with a rucksack and no plan at 8:40pm on Dec 31st 2022. He was spotted in Sri Lanka, Japan and Cornwall.

Now back in London, he works from his new studio/shop in Clerkenwell.

About the Festival

Future Now is Sheffield’s festival of creativity. Through exhibitions, events, performances and screenings we ask emerging artists, designers, filmmakers, animators, writers, architects and performers to open a window into their practices and show us their - and our - futures. This is a citywide platform showcasing the work of Sheffield Hallam University’s graduating students, and we invite visitors to encounter new ways of understanding the world through art, design, architecture, film, photography, performance and writing.

Future Now presents creative proposals to real problems: from new fashion to new videogames human-centred approaches to the built environment to greater sustainability in the products we buy. These ‘creatives’ propose new brands and services, help us glimpse alternative realities, and launch new enterprises, but most of all they tell stories, documenting the world as they find it and how they’d like it to be.

Future Now takes place across Sheffield city centre and online from April - July 2024.
